Jackson Thornton, a certified public accounting and consulting firm, was established in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 1, 1919. Originally known as H. C. Crane & Co., clients were primarily drawn from cotton merchants and shopkeepers in the downtown area. With an established reputation for integrity, Mr. Crane pursued a pragmatic philosophy of helping his clients solve their financial concerns.
The firm changed the name to Crane, Jackson and Thornton P.C. in the 1950's, incorporating founding principals Jackson and Thornton and operated under this name until the mid-60's when Crane retired and the firm became Jackson Thornton & Co., P.C. later known as Jackson Thornton.
Jackson Thornton was part of the revitalization of downtown Montgomery in the late 1970s; the firm was the first company to purchase property in the Lower Commerce Street Historic District for restoration and utilization as professional office space. The District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The restoration of the Jackson Thornton building, once used as a mill store by the Teague Hardware Company, was completed in 1980.
From this location, the high professional standards set early on have continued. Jackson Thornton Utilities, the first group to establish an industry specialization, was launched in the early 1980s. Specialization continued to grow in response to client needs, and Jackson Thornton professionals soon developed specialties in other high growth industries, such as construction, manufacturing and healthcare.
Client services were further expanded in 1996 when Jackson Thornton became the only area firm to affiliate with RSM McGladrey & Pullen, the seventh largest accounting firm in the country, and made its wealth of resources available to our clients.
Jackson Thornton's Valuation and Litigation Consulting Group evolved in response to the growing need for experienced professionals, trained in valuation and litigation support services.
In addition, Jackson Thornton's extensive experience working with closely held businesses and their owners led to the development of two subsidiaries, Jackson Thornton Asset Management LLC and Jackson Thornton Benefit Resources LLC, to serve their needs.
Over the years, Jackson Thornton has also kept pace with the efficient use of technology to conduct business and throughout the 1990's consulted with clients on many aspects of its use, including software, networks and training. Jackson Thornton Technologies LLC was formed to continue to meet clients' technology needs. This is another way that a firm with a long history of client service keeps its eye on the future.
While the philosophy of client-centered service has not changed, the professional accounting and consulting firm now serves more than 4,000 clients, in four locations, with a team of 100 professionals trained as both accountants and business consultants.
